Permanent residence permit
After five years of temporary residence in Slovakia, foreigners have the right to apply for a permanent (long-term) residence at the relevant department of the Foreign Police. This right applies to all family members who have been granted residence for the purpose of family reunion. Permanent residence is granted for an unlimited period. This means that you are entitled to almost all civil rights as a citizen of the Slovak Republic, e.g. possibility to vote in elections. After 10 years of residence in Slovakia (5 years temporary residence and 5 years permanent residence) you have the opportunity to acquire Slovak citizenship. However, it is necessary to pass general language and knowledge exams in the Slovak language.
There are 4 types of permanent residence in Slovakia:
- granting permanent residence in Slovakia for 5 years;
- granting permanent residence in the territory of Slovakia for an unlimited period;
- granting long-term residence in the territory of Slovakia;
- the right to reside in the territory of Slovakia for a citizen of a state of the European Union.
If a foreigner has temporary residence permit for the purpose of study or some special activity, s/he must first obtain temporary residence permit for another purpose (for example, for the purpose of employment or business) before s/he is entitled to apply for permanent residence permit.
What does the client need when applying for permanent residence permit
- Valid passport;
- Two colour photographs 3,0 x 3,5 cm;
- Completed application to the Foreign Police Department;
- Document of financial coverage of residence in the amount of 12-times the statutory life minimum (min. 3300 €);
- Document on health insurance, not older than 90 days;
- Fee for submitting the application: 165,50 € (does not apply to children under 18);
- Fee for issuing a card for a temporary residence permit : 24,50 € (up to 2 days)/ 4,50 € (up to 30 days);
- Fee for delivery of the card to the address: 3 €.
